On September 2, 2016, Vanessa Richards left home in the early afternoon to go to work. Her son Karl Melo-Richards was staying with her, after he and his long-term girlfriend decided to take a break earlier that day.
In the early evening, Karl's younger sister returned home to find the front and back doors open and no sign of Karl. His keys, wallet, and car were still at the house, but his cell phone was gone.
The family has heard nothing from Karl since that day.
Vanessa said that Karl had been suffering from insomnia, depression, and anxiety for the past year. The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) reported, "Ms Richards, who also has two younger children, said her son’s insomnia had 'come back to haunt him constantly' this year and he had not slept for four days prior to his disappearance."
Because he had been sick and has had so many episodes involving depression, Karl had a hair follicle tests done, but he didn't get the results back before he disappeared.
MUA wrote, "Ms Richards said a few days ago the results of hair follicle tests revealed 'off the chart' levels of heavy metal toxins including lead and traces of uranium in his blood stream which would explain his depression, anxiety and insomnia."
Now Vanessa is desperate to get this information to Karl, wherever he may be. Vanessa understands that her son may not be ready to come home, but she hopes he can get the medical attention he needs.
MUA wrote, "She said he needed to urgently go to a doctor and he would be given medication to draw the metals — which may have formed deposits on his brain — out of his blood stream and detox his body."
Vanessa hopes that the more people who share this message, the more likely it is that Karl will see it and seek medical help.
