Colorado Police Find Burned Human Remains In Home Of Missing 5-Year-Old Girl’s Mother

It is hard to wrap one’s mind around a mother killing her children. This appears to be the case in Aurora, Colorado.

Alexus Tanielle Nelson’s mother called police after she became concerned that her granddaughter, Maha Li Hobbs, was in danger. Grandma’s instincts appear to have been correct. When performing a welfare check, police found no signs of the 5-year-old. After arresting Alexus on charges including attempting to influence a public servant, human remains were found at her apartment.

Alexus’ mom was worried when her daughter told her she was going to put Maha up for adoption. "My rent has gone up again so rehoming and I've been looking at fostering,” Alexus wrote in a text message to her mom. This prompted grandma to call 911 on May 30.

Alexus initially claimed she had given Maha up for adoption, just as she told her mother. Police soon found many holes in her story, which raised their suspicions. The following day, they returned to the apartment with a search warrant and say they found a plastic bag with burned human remains. There were reportedly also bone fragments in the fireplace. At this time, the remains have not been officially identified as Maha's, but investigators strongly believe that will end up being the case.

Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo got visibly emotional during a press conference Thursday when speaking about the case. It was a difficult crime scene for all who worked there. "We are very confident that this is our victim,” he stated speaking of the remains found. “There’s a high probability that murder charges will end up being filed.”
