A Michigan mom doesn't understand why her daughter's cheer uniform is considered appropriate for games, but not appropriate for school. The mom, Amanda Alburg, says that her daughter wore her cheer uniform to school on the day of a home basketball game, as requested by her coach.
However, her daughter was told that she had to wear pants under her skirt because the cheer skirts violate Pinconning High School's dress code, WNEM5 reported. In a statement shared with the outlet, the superintendent, Andy Kowalczyk, confirmed that the cheer skirts are not considered appropriate for school.
"Athletic uniforms may not meet school dress code requirements. This is the case for the length of the cheerleading skirts. PHS would not allow students from any sports team to wear uniforms to school that do not meet those requirements," Kowalczyk said in the statement shared with WNEM5.
Alburg alleges that when she called the Pinconning High School office about the issue, she was told that cheerleaders wearing their uniforms to school without pants underneath would be too distracting for boys at school.

However, the superintendent claims that the girls were not told that their uniforms were too distracting for boys. Still, Alburg says, "That is what I was told personally."
"If they didn’t say it to the girls, I’m not sure. My daughter didn’t say that she was told that. But she was told, ‘Put pants on,’” she explained to WNEM5.
The mom believes there's nothing unusual about girls wearing their cheer uniforms to school on game days — it's something that has been done since she was in high school (if not for even longer), she explained to WNEM5.
She believes that since the uniforms have been deemed acceptable for the girls to wear at games, the cheerleaders surely should also be able to wear them to school.
And she's not the only parent who saw a problem with the school's policy. One mom spoke about how the school's dress code is "a double standard and it’s a violation of our girls’ civil rights" at a school board meeting, WNEM5 reported.
The mom pointed out that girls can't wear sports bras to practice (after school), but some boys practice shirtless.
The superintendent said that the meeting that was held with the cheerleaders was about their new uniforms, and the cheerleaders were not in trouble.
However, the mom that initially contacted the school about the issue is not the only one who thinks there's a problem with the school's dress code. Some members of the school board agreed that the dress code might need to be reevaluated, WNEM5 reported.
