Nowadays, it's common for some new moms to keep their placenta and turn them into capsules for consumption.
The placenta, the bridge between the mother and her baby in the womb, is believed by some to have several benefits for the mom and her newborn. It reportedly reduces the risk of postpartum depression and enriches the mother's breast milk. Some say it even helps with weight loss.
This is what one expecting mom in Mississippi wanted to do, but she was surprised to hear that she was not able to. In some states, placenta, or afterbirth, is considered to be medical waste and cannot be taken out of the hospital.
Jordan Theiring took her case to court, arguing that her placenta would come out of her body at the same time as her baby, and of course, her baby is not considered "medical waste," she added.
She's now also looking to pave the way for other moms and help change the Health Department's rules about what should be considered medical waste.
