Mom Admits to Poisoning Estranged Husband After Learning He Would Get Full Custody of Their Child

A mom in Connecticut is facing some serious charges after authorities determined she secretly poisoned her estranged husband amid a tumultuous custody battle. According to documents Connecticut State Police released, Kristen Hogan allegedly put ethylene glycol, a chemical in antifreeze, in the man’s wine and iced tea.

The victim, who was unnamed in the documents, drank a “small amount” of wine from his fridge on August 10, 2025. He claims he woke up repeatedly throughout the night, throwing up. When the victim’s mother arrived to check on him, she found him in a disoriented state. He was staggering, slurring his words, and continued to vomit, so she immediately rushed him to the hospital.

Doctors initially assumed it was a stroke but ultimately connected the symptoms to ethylene glycol poisoning, according to the New York Post. While in the ICU, the man told doctors about the wine he had consumed. He met with Ridgefield Police Department officers and immediately reported that he believed Hogan did it, as he was set to become the owner of their previously shared residence and gain full-time custody of their child.

He went on to say that he believed Hogan slipped into the home — she had full access to it — during a scheduled court date she didn’t show up to. He then noted that he got an alert that she was connected to his Wi-Fi at the time.

At first, Hogan denied any wrongdoing, even as police picked apart her story. Detectives seized bottles of wine and iced tea in his home and determined the deadly chemical was in both, the Post reported. Authorities found Hogan’s cellphone contained several searches for toxic substances, and she claimed she “was confused about the chemicals and then stated she recognized the word cyanide from the television show Psych,” according to the arrest affidavit.

The mom acknowledged buying a bottle of monoethylene glycol in July but insisted it was to clean the carpet in her mother’s home.

She ultimately confessed to poisoning the two bottles, allegedly saying she “never wanted to kill him but just wanted to make him sick as payback for being mentally abusive.”

Their child, 2, was hospitalized in late September for similar symptoms, though Hogan adamantly denied that their child could gain access to the chemical.

Hogan was charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of interfering with an officer and is being held on a $1 million bond, per the Post.
