It's not too surprising that the daughter of the one and only Frank Sinatra would go on to find her own success as a musical performer. Though her style was much more reflective of the groovy '60s era than her dad's jazzy '50s crooning, he was clearly very proud of his talented little girl, signing her to his label, Reprise Records, and connecting her with songwriter Lee Hazelwood.
Nancy and Hazelwood found their first big hit with "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," but while it served as her breakthrough into the mainstream airwaves, the iconic tune wasn't the end of their successful partnership. Together, the pair crafted a beautiful blend of country western and rock and roll that became their signature sound for songs like "Some Velvet Morning" and "Summer Wine." His twangy voice meshed perfectly with her low, sultry tone on those, as well as covers of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash's "Jackson" and Cher's "Bang Bang."
For the delightful ditty below, though, Nancy takes the lead all on her own. "Sugar Town" was penned by Hazelwood as a dainty pop hit that was perfect for the radio. Its cheery lyrics and sing-song-y melody instantly put listeners in a great mood! I know I can't help but smile every time it comes up while I'm shuffling through my playlists.
The video below takes the cutesy to a new level of charm with Nancy landing on-screen in a hot-air balloon.
