Loren Krytzer was living off of a $839 disability check after a car crash left him with amputated legs. But his luck all changed thanks to a blanket that had been in his family for decades.
"I came across a First Phase Chief's Navajo blanket that was handed down to the family," he says in the John Moran Auctions video below. "I never really thought it was worth any large sum of money."
But after watching an episode of PBS' Antiques Roadshow, he realized that he might have a very expensive item in his possession. A man had a similar blanket on the show and learned that his was worth half a million dollars. That's when he reached out to John Moran Auctioneers for an appraisal.
"The blanket before us is probably woven prior to 1850, maybe 1840s," says Jeff Moran. "[These] weavings represent the beauty of the Navajo tradition."
Much like a former child model who learned how much her collection was worth and the woman who was surprised by the worth of two German bird boxes, Krytzer was in for quite a surprise.
He soon realized his life would be forever changed once he learned just how much the First Phase Chief's Navajo blanket he had was really worth on auction day.
“It’s like winning the lottery, I had no idea. I’m still freaking out,” he said. “It’s changed my whole life.”
