When I was 10 years old, my family went to Six Flags Great Adventure. As a kid I was always a wuss, too scared to ride any roller coasters. I mean, can you blame me? Just look at Giga, "the world's scariest roller coaster," or the Gravity Max that splits in half!
I was a total scaredy cat — but at 10 years old I had entered the double digits, so I wanted to be brave. I sucked up my fears and decided to ride the roller coaster on Skull Mountain. I thought it would be safe because it was an indoor roller coaster. Boy, was I wrong.
The only thing that held us in our seats was a safety bar. The bar gauge locked over the thighs. The trouble was that I was a tiny ten-year-old sitting next to my dad. The safety bar closed over my dad's thighs leaving a giant space between me and the bar. There was no way I was secured. So my tiny ten-year-old legs dangled from the side of the roller coaster as my dad held me tightly, the only thing that saved me was the centrifugal force and my father's grip.
I came out unscathed, and I live to tell the tale. These GIFs are a bit more exciting than my little trip to Skull Mountain, but seeing them made me think of my near-death roller coast experience, because I felt that adrenaline rush and the relief of the following "phew!" moment.
While my dad saved me before, these people relied on their split-second flight or fight instincts to get out right in the nick of time.
