Negative space, in both art and design, is crucial. Without the empty area surrounding the focal point of a piece, there would be nothing, or at least not much, to look at. Negative space helps draw the eye to the subject, and makes it even more prominent.
So, if it's so important, why not use it on your manicure?
A manicure can make or break an outfit, and can define your style. If your manicure is good, you can almost wear whatever you want and still look fresh. But I know lots of people who deem their nails as high art. They have to make sure that there's always something a little special about their manicure, whether it's a simple gem here or there, or a full-on pattern.
For those of you who fall under this category, give these negative space manicures a try! Get inspiration from your favorite artists, grab your favorite polish, and get painting!
1. Cover the white areas with random colors...

This creates a fun twist on your natural nails.
2. Try some zig-zagging negative space.

It adds something a little extra to the already dazzling glitter.
3. Like rick rack?

Give this cute design a try, and add a floral party nail for kicks!
4. These ooey-gooey nails are a beautiful mess.

Imagine this with some green slime, or even with some watery blue! This can go in so many different directions.
5. A single curved line can make a world of a difference.

Use one to separate two similar colors to make heads turn.
6. These little windows into negative space are precious.

See how the lack of color really makes the colors you choose pop?
7. Can't go wrong with polka dots!

They're just so cute, and with your natural nail as the background, nice and understated.

11. Who doesn't love stars?

Paired with this deep green, they're very straight out of a fairy tale.
12. Turquoise and silver tips are pristine.

I love the naked nail underneath this marbled turquoise… it's very earthy and easygoing.
13. It's the very opposite of a black heart.

Lined in blue glitter, this negative space of a heart is too cute.
14. This may be my favorite.

Do one hand in solid colors, and the other in bold dots. I can't exactly place why, but it just looks so cool! Don't you think?
15. Try outlining your favorite pattern in negative space!

This makes for such a clean look. Finish with some shimmery glitter!
These are almost too cool for school. Any true artist will be able to appreciate the beauty in these nails, and I'm definitely going to invest in some striping tape to get going on some of these styles.
