Nicole Jensen always lets her daughter, Brooklynn, play in the local park. The park is directly across the street from her home, in view from her window.
It seemed like a great place for her 7-year-old to play with the other kids, while she can keep an eye from home. Jensen also requires that she check in every hour. None of this seems unusual from what any other parent does.
“I can usually count on at least a dozen that I know and that she plays with,” Jensen said. “We watch each other's kids. I don't just send her over there and ignore her all day.”
However, one day Jensen was shocked when she received a call from the police. They said Brooklynn was in the park unsupervised.
“They said, 'Do you know where your daughter is?' and I said, 'Yes,' and they said, 'Well no you don't. She's at the police station,” Jensen said. "[The officer] said she was at the park unsupervised, no one knew where she was, and if I hadn't gotten ahold of you, I would have taken her into DHHS.”
While they may have good intentions, some people cross the line when it comes to judging other people's parenting. For example, this mom was furious when the school told her she was a bad mother for giving her child Oreos.
Westbrook Police Chief Janine Roberts said they received a call saying Brooklynn was unattended for an hour.
“That's a long time for a 7-year-old girl to be by herself in any location, let alone a public park,” Roberts said.
“She was terrified,” Jensen said of the ordeal. “They brought her to the police station when her house is right there.”
Jensen is being charged with child endangerment. However, many are on her side claiming the police took things a bit too far.
