Life finds a way. Even in the face of all the horrors of the world, more and more beautiful babies are born and life continues. Even in a dank and gloomy prison cell, life finds away.
Such was the case in Weber County Prison in Utah, where corrections officer Jami Twitchell received a frantic emergency call around 8:30 at night.
One of her inmates was going into labor in her cell, and there wouldn't be enough time for paramedics to help before the baby arrived, putting the 34-year-old mother-to-be inmate in danger.
Twitchell was one of two officers to rush into the cell, and instantly they saw the baby crowning.
"I’m just kind of cradling the baby's head and we're keeping the mom covered with blankets and keeping her calm," Twitchell said to Fox 13 Now.
Twitchell held onto the baby and tried to comfort the mother until medical staff arrived, but at that point, the officer had already delivered the baby.
"You hear that cry, and that cry for the first time was like, what a relief, oh my gosh, this baby's okay," Nurse Ashlee Chappell said.
Both mom and daughter are completely healthy, thanks to the quick, fearless actions of Twitchell.
"I’ve had my own children, so I was just there to help her," Twitchell said. "I really didn't know what I was doing. I was just doing the best that I could."
