The Kind People Of Oklahoma Are Hydrating Their Mail Carriers Through A Heatwave

We’ve all experienced the abject misery of a really hot summer day before. The beating sun, the hazy air, and the constant pursuit of shade isn’t fun for anybody.

But, personally, I’ve never really thought about the person who probably catches the worst of it — the mailman. He’s out all day long delivering letters to hundreds of people, and, in some cases launching viral social media campaigns. All of that is hard to do when the mercury starts to spike!

For the men and women delivering mail in Oklahoma these days, it has to be even worse. A heat wave has been crashing through the state since mid-July, delivering temperatures in the high nineties and even into the triple digits.

Fortunately, the thoughtful folks living in the Oklahoma city called ‘The Village' have been thinking ahead! A local mailman passed out after suffering an episode of heatstroke, a condition which affects everyone from adults to small children this time of year.

Ever since, residents have been leaving coolers full of water and sports drinks on their porches for passing postal workers. It’s a way of paying it forward to the workers for whom “neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night” is a deterrent.

One random act of kindness sparked a local trend when someone posted on Facebook a description of this system for keeping the mail carriers hydrated. Before long, homes all over the area started sporting these considerate coolers, and residents report that the postal service definitely seems to appreciate the gesture!
