Oprah Reveals Child Prodigy’s Life-Altering Change

Oprah’s Where Are They Now? program always surprises and inspires, but this episode is particularly timely.

Twenty-four years ago, child prodigy James Charles Harries was Britain’s youngest tycoon. Watch him in 1991 at age 13 as he eloquently tells Oprah how he started his own antique business at age 4 and he how discovered that he wasn’t like the other children in terms of intellect.

Oprah checks in with Harries 24 years later to reveal that Harries wasn’t like most of the other children in other ways, too. James is now Lauren. Lauren honestly tells Oprah how she struggled with who she was: “I felt trapped in a burning building and needed a way out.” The trans-phobia she faced the first five years after she became Lauren (media attacks, bricks through the window, death threats) is a reminder of the hard road many transgender men and women have faced and continue to face.

Get a taste of Lauren’s new career as she sings “I was Born a Boy and Now I’m a Girl.” The most moving part of the video is her advice to her 13-year-old self: “You are a girl. [You can do something] now or wait.”
