Pamela Benson has a knack for giving. When she heard that a homeless man had passed away from brutally cold conditions outside, she was heartbroken. Then she decided to do something about it.
The East Texas woman was on Facebook one day when she stumbled upon a video. It explained how to crochet blankets out of plastic bags, just like you would with regular yarn. Then an idea sparked in Pamela's head.
After the recent situation involving the homeless man, she decided to get to work and create plastic bag blankets to keep the homeless safe and warm.
In the video below, posted on February 3, 2017, Pamela explains, "It doesn't matter how hard my hands hurt, I put some arthritis cream on and keep going."
The dedicated crocheter is proud of her project. "It really hit me hard when I heard about the man that had frozen to death in Longview and I thought, 'Oh gosh, surely I can do something about that.'"
After crocheting around 500 plastic bags together for several hours a day for a full four weeks, Pamela completed her first blanket, which she gave away to a woman named Lily.
"When I saw Lily's face, I thought I can't just leave it at one," Pamela says. That's when she decided to continue her project, not matter how long it takes.
