Darin Welker is an Iraq War veteran living in West Lafayette, Ohio, with 14 pet ducks who comfort him for both physical and mental therapy. Welker says that the birds have been a great help comforting his post traumatic stress disorder and depression, but by keeping the birds he's breaking local laws and could owe up to $150 in fines.
According to the local newspaper, Coshocton Tribune, a 2010 law allows only "dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds or mice" as pets, even though his local Veteran Affairs office provided a letter recommending that he keep the ducks. Welker says the 10 Pekin ducks and four mallards help give him some responsibility and self worth. Welkin returned from Iraq in 2005 with a bad back and says the ducks also help him stay physically active. Friends, family and strangers have banned together to try to help Welker!
