If you're a nerd like I am, you're going to love this cool experiment.
We may never know how YouTube user The Backyard Scientist came up with the idea to pour molten aluminum into a watermelon, but I'm so glad he did. This brave (and perhaps crazy) young man was prepared for anything — he's experienced all sorts of weird injuries as a result of his experiments, so he made sure he was decked out in all the proper gear, just in case something explosive happened. But rather than blowing up all over the yard, this watermelon-and-aluminum reaction created something totally unexpected…and totally beautiful.
They're one of our favorite summertime treats, but watermelons are good for so much more than just eating off the rind. I'd seen people use these scrumptious fruits to infuse their tea before, but I never thought they could be use to make geeky art like this! It's crazy how such a simple experiment can yield such cool results. Creating watermelon art like this is certainly more dangerous (and less delicious) than this easy animal fruit sculpture, but this one will definitely last longer if you choose to display it on your mantle.
Obviously, this is not something you should try at home unless you know exactly what you're doing and have taken the necessary safety precautions. But for me, just watching someone create this was super satisfying. I'd love to see the different sculptures that would come out of trying this with different fruits, wouldn't you?
