Sometimes we hear stories about animals that commit acts that make us wonder if they’re really that different from us. We see this behavior particularly in animal moms, like this elephant who protected her baby from oncoming cars, and this cat who took a squirrel under her wing.
But what makes some of these stories extra-special? When this loving behavior has never been displayed before!
Zombi’s story and act of extreme compassion is a story we’ll never forget. It’s not unheard of that chimps can ‘adopt’ orphaned babies and be surrogate mothers. This is usually brought on by zoos and chimp experts.
When Zombi’s chimp friend Soona was dying as she was giving birth, she stayed by her side until the end. Zombi herself was pregnant.
And then something spectacular happened!
Without hesitation, she adopted her friend’s healthy baby as her own!
This is unheard of considering the circumstances: Zombi willingly assumed care of the infant so close to the birth of her own baby, which will happen later this month.
We were nearly brought to tears by this heartwarming story. We’re so happy that this baby has a mother that will care for him like her own. And it just shows how similar chimps are to us!
