Mary Ours, a meteorologist for WJAC news in Pennsylvania, recently shared a post about a traffic anchor in Dallas who was body-shamed by a viewer for how she looks and dresses. Reporter Demetria Obilor made headlines after being criticized for wearing a figure-hugging dress on air and not being a size 6.
Mary then found herself on the receiving end of similar body-shaming, and said it happens on a daily basis. This time, a commenter felt it necessary to give fashion tips after watching her do her job.
"Just watched the weather forecast — some fashion consulting please."
Not the most vicious trolling we've seen, but it's definitely a rude and unnecessary comment. And here's the thing: Mary recently announced she's pregnant with her first child — a baby girl.
She says she now owes it to herself and her daughter to try and make a positive difference.
Instead of letting the unsolicited comment bring her down, Mary wrote an important message to her viewers on Facebook…
"I recently shared a post about a traffic anchor in Dallas who was body-shamed by a viewer for how she looks and dresses."
"She's not the only one who deals with this — I do too practically every day and I put up with it but, it's not OK!
It's time that this needs to be addressed."
"Women in particular feel that they can say whatever they want to someone about their size and how they dress in a public forum where everyone can see it (image above)".
"If you don't know from my million announcements on social media, I'm pregnant and I'm so excited!"
"Yes, my body is going to be changing drastically and I will be growing so the negative comments about how I dress and look are unnecessary and will not be tolerated — it's bullying!"
"We as women should be supporting each other not putting each other down."
"As the saying goes, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say it at all."
"And, if I have a daughter I want her to know that it is okay to stand up for yourself and be happy in your own skin, so hopefully I can teach her that."
"As I become a mother soon, I feel I owe it to myself to try and make a difference and put a stop to the online bullying and body-shaming. I am growing a human, and I am doing my best. But, to everyone who is kind and supports me – thank you very much and you all are amazing!"
