How To Prevent Your Cat From Scratching Your Furniture

Much like Cesar Millan is to dogs — teaching us the ins and outs of dog behavior — as is Jackson Galaxy to cats. This cat expert shares information about everything on how to properly pet your cat (and yes — there are right and wrong ways), to training your cat to let you sleep.

But one of the frequent annoyances bemoaned by cat owners is their habit of making scratching posts out of all your nicest future. This isn't necessarily a malicious or attention-seeking behavior (unless they're being neglected, which is another issue entirely). Your bed and sofa, explains Jackson, are the areas in your home where your scent is strongest. In order to mark their territory and stake their claim over the space, which is a natural habit of any pet in their home, they try to mix their scent in with yours. They do this by rubbing and scratching, much to our dismay.

Whatever you do, he advises, do not declaw your cat. Instead, trim their nails — it'll help preserve your furniture and when done correctly comes at no harm to your cat. They also need an alternative to their favorite scratching areas, so make sure posts and other toys nearby offer a safe alternative. Jackson has some more helpful tips in the video below.
