Teens Win Scholarships For Crafting Glow-In-The-Dark Duct Tape Prom Outfits

When I set out to find my perfect prom dress way back in my senior year, I definitely didn't start by hitting up the hardware store. However, more creative kids these days like to craft their own unique frocks for the big dance. I'm sure my mom would have appreciated spending a little less money by simply buying me some cases of soda or chewing gum to use as my materials, but I was a bigger fan of the traditional taffeta.

This couple, however, decided to take on the annual "Stuck at Prom" challenge held by Duck Brand duct tape. That's right, the item most of us use to fix things around the house transformed the duo into a surprisingly dapper pair for their festivities in 2014. With a $10,000 scholarship for each of them on the line, Ryan and Gabrielle took their task seriously as they designed the art deco, 1920s-inspired outfits.

They chose their throwback theme before the school announced the prom would be in the style of The Great Gatsby. What a happy coincidence!

It took Ryan and Gabrielle 59 hours spread out over four months to complete the geometric designs for the dress, jacket, pants, shoes, and accessories.

And for an added bonus, they decided to use glow-in-the-dark tape for the details! Here you see the back of the jacket and dress.

And this is the front. I just love how the fringe looks with that gleam!

And, of course, all the accessories. In total, they used 12 rolls of the tape.

While they didn't win first place, they still managed to snag third, earning $3,000 scholarships each. Hey, that's not too shabby! That's even better than getting crowned King and Queen, if you ask me. Especially since they had such a blast making the ensembles. I'm sure the dance was fun, too!
