‘The Doctors’ Answer: Could Your Baby Harm Itself In The Womb?

Ultrasounds provide us with a magical window into our unborn children. Although at times, it can be a little unclear as to what's really going on in there. We've seen infants singing and even clapping in the womb, but when it came to this little one, his mother and grandmother were concerned. Ultrasound appeared to show the baby boy punching himself in the womb. Grandma was concerned about the little fellow giving himself a concussion before he was even born. The panel on The Doctors took the time to explain what was really going on and answer an important question: can infants harm themselves in the womb?

Infants can get hurt, but it would be due to a severe trauma. So what was going on in this mom's ultrasound? The baby was illustrating "good fetal tone." When a child is in utero, it's important to see their hands in a grabbing position and their arms raised. This show's the child's reflexes are developing. Sometimes it can look a little like a fist punching, but doctors say it's most likely a startle reflex. If something has caught the little one off guard, it may jolt him. This is another good sign his reflexes are working. So rest assured, Grandma, there is no risk of concussion in this particular case!
