When Brenda and Scott learned they were pregnant with their first child, they never expected what was in store for them. During their first ultrasound, the doctor gave the expecting parents a strange look. Not only did the ultrasound show twins, but it also showed something both atypical and disconcerting.
The two babies were positioned so close together that at first, the doctor thought they were conjoined twins. But Dr. McComis realized the babies were monochorionic-monoamniotic, or "MOMO" twins. This is a case where identical twins end up in the same gestational sac. Momo twins occur in a mere one percent of pregnancies involving twins.
Brenda and Scott had to prepare themselves for the worst-case scenario, since Dr. McComis told them that the twins would potentially face danger of cord entanglement. Their umbilical cords wrap around each other as the fetuses grow. One baby, or both babies, could have died.
After 25 weeks of pregnancy, Brenda was admitted to the hospital so doctors could monitor her around the clock. For five weeks, Brenda was confined to her hospital bed before going into labor two weeks early.
