When I had long hair, I would love styling my locks into an awesome retro bun. I loved pairing the hairstyle with a shiny barrette or a bandana, but I always took such a long time trying to get it right. I didn't have one of those handy bun donuts, but after seeing this tutorial, I realize that this style could be done in no time. With a few simple tricks, an elastic, and some bobby pins, this retro fan bun hairstyle is so easy — and chic!
If you loved the elastic-less hair bun, you're sure to love this style, too. Start with a high ponytail, then pull the elastic back an inch or two down the ponytail. With your thumb and forefinger, create an opening between your head and the elastic. Flip your ponytail over your head, and pull it through the gap. Be sure to keep a little "bump" above the elastic, and not pull the ponytail all the way through!
Next, fan the sides of this "bump" by pulling on its sides. You can fan it out as much or as little as you want! Divide the remainder of the ponytail into two sections. Wrap each one over the elastic, and pin them at the bottom of the fanned bun. Finally, take the sides of the bun and pin them to your head. Use a little hairspray to keep it all in place, and you're all ready to go!
