Reverend Demetrius Guyton is a well-liked pillar of his community. He’s an evangelist who walks the streets of Birmingham every day helping people in need and trying to bring them the same peace that he feels following God.
But Demetrius didn’t always feel this comfortable in his own skin. In fact, he spent many years barely holding back his anger and self-loathing after a childhood incident that left him irreparably scarred, much like this woman who was attacked by a romantic rival.
When Demetrius was just two months old, his mother attempted to poison him by filling his bottle with a mixture of hydrochloric acid and castor oil. She hoped to collect a $25,000 life insurance policy, but fortunately, Demetrius survived the incident.
He was left with scars all over his face—not unlike this girl injured by a ceiling tile—and a profound anger towards those around him. He couldn’t bring himself to believe in a higher power that would allow him to be disfigured by his own mother.
He began using drugs and joined a gang. Eventually, he landed in prison after assaulting a man he found in bed with his then-wife. As it turns out, this was the best possible place for him to end up.
While he was behind bars, Demetrius met an evangelist with an incredible story, a story about a woman from another prison, who had attempted to murder her son years earlier. Watch the video below to the see how this encounter changed Rev. Guyton into the man he is today.
