When She Poured Rice Into Her Old Sock, I Thought She Was Crazy. But This Is Genius!

The other night I decided I'd jog for a couple of miles in the park near my house. I run pretty often, but something got into me that night. Maybe it was a particular song, or maybe I realized that spring was coming up and I was still packing on the winter weight. Whatever it was, I decided to push myself to go much faster and much farther than I normally do.

It felt great — until it didn't.

I got home and realized that my calf muscles were killing me. Of course, I didn't even notice it until I had already sat down on the couch. I knew that alternating hot and cold pads on my legs usually helped alleviate that tension. The only problem was, I didn't have any heating pads, and I really wasn't feeling like walking to the local drug store.

I did a Google search to find out how to make my own heating pad, and found the brilliant solution below uploaded by the user Carleyy on Instructables.com. It took me five minutes and I had an amazing heating pad using items I already had in my house!

First find an old pair of socks. Make sure they are clean and have no holes.

Pour yourself 1.5 cups of uncooked rice. You can also use oatmeal, buckwheat, barley, or uncooked beans for this part.

Simply pour the rice into the sock, making sure none of it spills. (Hint: for a flavorful experience, maybe sprinkle some lavender or other dried herbs inside as well!)

Tie the sock into a knot at the top. Make sure the rice is in there tightly, but not so tight that the sock is rigid.

Place one sock inside the other, then tie the other sock shut as well. If you would like to have a cooling pad, too, do those same steps with another pair of socks.

Microwave the sock for two-to-three minutes, and it should be warm throughout. You'll even be surprised by how long the heat lasts. Place the other sock in the freezer if you'd like a cold pad as well.

The great thing is that you can use old socks without a mate so that they don't just get tossed away.

Though, of course, the more fun and quirky the socks you choose, the more interesting the heating pad will be!
