Actress Rita Wilson Reveals Health Scare — And Shares Advice To Save Women’s Lives Everywhere

Rita Wilson took a break from Broadway’s Fish in the Dark to deal with an unexpected health issue: breast cancer.

Like Angelina Jolie, who was candid about her own health issues, and Taylor Swift, who recently revealed devastating news about her mother, the Sleepless in Seattle star also shared her story to help spread awareness.

“I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion,” Wilson, who had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, told People magazine.

Tom Hanks’ wife suffered from a condition called lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), which she said she’s screened with annual mammograms and MRIs. However, her doctors then discovered pleomorphic carcinoma in situ (PLCIS), but without signs of cancer.

Thanks to her friend’s suggestion, Wilson decided to get a second opinion. That's when another pathologist found invasive lobular carcinoma, a type of breast cancer.

With the help of her “loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors,” Wilson said she’s on her way to “renewed health.” She’s also set to return to the play.

“I share this to educate others that a second opinion is critical to your health. You have nothing to lose if both opinions match up for the good, and everything to gain if something that was missed is found, which does happen,” she said. “Early diagnosis is key.”
