In 1986, Carol Burnett teamed up with a few of her famous friends for an hour-long music and comedy special. In the clip below, viewers are treated to a hilarious yet rarely seen sketch entitled "The Funeral" starring Carol Burnett and the late, great Robin Williams.
Robin — who was just 36 at the time — plays the role of Marcus, the eccentric friend of a recently deceased man. Marcus tries to comfort the man's widow (played by Carol) and help her cope with the loss of her husband. The result is hysterical, and let's just say his character needs to work on his therapy skills.
Then, at 6:31, the two actors re-do the skit, and something magical happens. Carol is caught off-guard when Robin begins improvising his lines! When he bursts into a spiritual song, you can even see Carol looking away from the camera in a fit of genuine laughter. It's incredible to watch this scene unfold, two comedy legends acting together in a sketch that seems to play so naturally for both of them.
With a funeral home as the setting, death as the subject matter, and Robin as the main character, it'd be easy to let our minds wander to a dark place. But then we're quickly reminded of Robin's genius; in the end, he leaves us smiling and laughing.
