Dad Of 2 Falls Into Coma & Awakes To All 4 Limbs Amputated After Routine Dentist Appointment

Scheduling in the dentist should be a routine part of self-care. It’s one of the ones I struggle most to make time for. I’m very lucky to have genetically healthy teeth, but there are plenty of people who go to the dentist and receive bad news. For Davon Vanterpool, 34, a routine visit to the dentist led to a life-altering condition. Vanterpool’s family believes the dentist pressing forward with an oral exam despite the man having inflamed gums caused him to become unwell. He quickly developed flu-like symptoms, which triggered a series of incidents that led to the amputation of all four of his limbs.

Alicia Wilder, Vanterpool’s partner, said she knew things were bad when he was rushed to urgent care and did not get better.

People reported that after Wilder ran some errands at a local shop, she returned home to a visibly worse Vanterpool.

“He said ‘I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m so cold and I can’t stop shaking,” she claimed. “He was throwing up and then he had diarrhea.”

After he was rushed to the hospital, the man’s condition began to deteriorate because of sepsis, a condition that occurs after the body responds improperly to an infection. His heart reportedly stopped twice before doctors put him on a ventilator and eventually into a medically induced coma.

While he was under, doctors amputated his right leg, his left leg below the knee, his left forearm, and his right hand.

This was necessary to save his life by stopping the infection from spreading further. According to a GoFundMe account set up by Wilder, Vanterpool had multiple surgeries over the course of a few months, with doctors revisiting amputation spots to ensure healing will be as smooth as possible.

“He’s got a life sentence for nothing. He was otherwise a very normal active person, dad and worker every day prior to that day,” Wilder wrote on the GoFundMe’s page, which has reached a little over $64,000 of its $100,000 goal.

“In Davon’s case his gums were really inflamed when the dentist was in there poking in his mouth and it caused bleeding in his gums. The dentists didn’t say ‘maybe I shouldn’t go forwards with this entire exam even though his gums are severely inflamed and bleeding,” she continued on the page. “Everyone has bacteria in their mouth but in Davon’s situation the bacteria entered into his mouth because there were multiple pathways created in his gums.”

Vanterpool has yet to make it to rehab, according to an update on the fundraising page.

But things are starting to look up a bit. Wilder reported that on April 12, 2026, she heard him belly laugh for the first time since this ordeal began.

“They are talking about sending him next week, which is a big step. He’s been doing some leg exercises in bed while he waits,” Wilder reported on the page.

Vanterpool is set for one more surgery next week to close what is left of his right hip. Although his skin grafts are healing well, he does have wounds that aren’t healing due to large blisters that formed thanks to purpura fulminans, a condition he developed after sepsis, that is defined by rapid blood clotting in small vessels, that can cause serious damage, including multi-organ failure.

Wilder also reported that his voice is becoming clearer and that he won’t need dialysis for his damaged kidneys, which feels like another huge win after months of losses.

“Of course there is still a long road ahead, but seeing him laugh, seeing his personality come back, and seeing these small moments means everything,” she shared.
