Ruby Rose Has Some Amazing Advice About Being Yourself

Ruby Rose wears a lot of hats. And we aren’t just talking about her phenomenal collection of baseball caps here. Ruby Rose is an Australian artist, model, and performer who is currently drawing rave reviews in her turn as the newest inmate to join the cast of ‘Orange Is The New Black.’ Rose is also part of a new generation of genre-defying celebrities who aren’t afraid of shining a spotlight on the qualities that make them individuals.

Rose is openly queer, and identifies as genderfluid, though she still prefers to use female pronouns. She has also been forthright in her discussion of mental well-being, and the importance of being true to your own story.

This June 2014 interview of Rose discussing beauty and individuality with beauty blogger Sigourney Cantelo recently resurfaced, and provides a great example about the benefits you can reap by being unafraid to express those things that made you an individual. Just look at the heartwarming reactions in this video about kids coming out to their dads!

In Rose’s case, her androgyny, her edgy style, and her quick-draw charisma led to her big break as a VJ for MTV Australia. She describes going through the audition process, and deciding that if MTV doesn’t work out, she’ll tone down her personal style and try to fit better into the mainstream. As it turned out, the mainstream just isn’t where she belongs, and she’s thrived outside of it, much like teenage transgender activist and author, Jazz Jennings.

This is great inspiration for anyone who is worried that their dreams are too far-fetched, that their story is too strange, or that they just "don’t fit in." Ruby Rose is here to tell you that it’s just fine; if you don’t fit in, you were probably born to stand out.
