Couple Once Lived Off Discarded Food, But Then Drop Biggest Donation To Salvation Army In Kettle

A bell ringer in Minnesota got a huge surprise when they were going through their kettle on November 30, 2015. Instead of finding just change and dollar bills, the found a $500,000 check, the biggest donation ever made in the history of the Minnesota Salvation Army.

And even though their name was on the check, the donors wanted to remain anonymous.

The donors have said that at one time they survived by eating discarded food. So  instead of taking the credit, they want people to be inspired by their generosity and give what they are able, if they are able.

“You get to a point in life where it’s time to take care of others, the way you were taken care of,” the donors said in the statement.

The donors have also said that the check was also meant to honor one of their father’s military service. He used to love the Salvation Army Donut Lassies who would bring coffee and doughnuts to the soldiers, and never quite forgot their generosity and now his children wished to honor the organization’s generosity.

And with such a big gift, the Twin Cities Salvation Army will be better able to serve the families that need their services the most in more ways than ever.

This is a true blessing and it could not come at a better time for The Salvation Army and the people we serve,” said Major Jeff Strickler, the Twin Cities commander.
