Colette Kingston's elderly mother fell and hit her head while trying to grab her trash can from the driveway in January 2019.
Her mother, Opal, has dementia.
Colette quickly installed a security camera outside Opal's home in Independence, Missouri. Thanks to this home monitoring system, Colette can keep an eye on her mom throughout the day to make sure she's OK and accounted for.
There were several occasions where Colette would check the security footage and see one of the neighborhood sanitation workers interacting with her mom. At first, she didn't think much of it. It just looked like some quick and friendly conversation between a garbage collector and a woman who could use some help.
But then one day, Colette noticed a particular encounter between the pair. She finally took a closer look at the way in which this particular city worker treated the fragile elderly woman.

Colette was so touched by what she saw that she began to cry … and she went on a mission to track down and identify the man himself.
She realized how often sanitation workers go unnoticed. "Most of the time you don’t even know their face, let alone a name with them," she told WDAF.
