Sometimes we don't give enough credit where credit is due, especially when it comes down to nurses. School nurses, for example, may be restricted to treating bloody noses and stomachaches, but that doesn't mean that they are not aware of all the signs and symptoms of more serious illnesses.
School nurse Patti Butler was alerted by one of the teachers that a kindergarten student, Nathan Campbell, didn't want to play outside because his legs hurt — something quite unusual for a child his age.
She took one look at Nathan and was immediately alarmed. His skin had an odd color. It was translucent, something she's only seen once before in 25 years. She called his mother and begged her to take him to a doctor.
The mom saw nothing wrong with her son and thought that the nurse was just being an alarmist. Patti called several times before the mother took the little boy to the doctor.
A few days later, she got her son's blood test results. The doctor called with a terrifying diagnosis: Nathan had leukemia.
Luckily, this form of the disease is very treatable. Nathan is expected to be OK, thanks to his school nurse's keen eye and knowledge! Patti has also been nominated for an award for her heroism.
