After losing two flippers, Freedom was left unable to raise his head above the water to breathe. This paraplegic sea turtle's fins were severed by sharp fishing line and he was discovered washed up on a beach in Israel. The Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Michmoret rehabilitated the turtle and kept him for four years.
The center had no choice but to amputate Freedom’s necrotic fins, but when they did, he was no longer able to swim or breathe properly. Freedom, whose Hebrew name is Hofesh, lived like this for four years before an industrial design student came around looking for a meaningful design project to complete for his thesis. Now, thanks to his new designer fin, Freedom is swimming around again and looking happier than ever before!
