An elderly Seattle Mariners fan celebrated her 108th birthday in a monumental way over the weekend — and she broke a record while doing so.
Evelyn Jones was invited to throw the first pitch at the Safeco Field on Saturday right before the team took on the Los Angeles Angels. She became the oldest fan to ever do so at a major league baseball game. (105-year-old Agnes McKee previously held the record with her pitch at a San Diego Padres game.)
The diehard fan wore a Mariners jersey with her name on the back along with her age underneath. Her daughter, Kay Vea, grandson Brad Vea, and granddaughter Robin Schifferman were right by her side for the memorable throw. Aside from Jones' huge smile after throwing it, she received a standing ovation and “Happy Birthday” chants.
Jones, who was born in 1907, has been a Mariners fan ever since the team debuted in 1977. Her family says she never misses the opportunity to watch a game on TV.
"She and my Dad watched all sports,'' her daughter told ESPN. "She loved the Sonics, she loved the Seahawks but she really loved the Mariners. She says, 'I love the Mariners!' She and my Dad never missed games and she still doesn't, which I think is pretty good for 108.''
