2 Years Ago, Doctor Lost Young Patient To Brain-Eating Amoeba. This Time, He Knew What To Do

When Sebastian DeLeon started to feel sick on his family vacation, he and his parents never would have dreamt of the diagnosis that the doctors gave him when they walked through the hospital doors.

He is the only one among the four people in the United States to have survived this condition in the past year.

When he was swimming in a lake in his hometown, Broward County, some of that warm, stagnant water went up his nose. A few days later, while his family was on vacation in Orlando, FL, his head started to hurt.

The water that traveled into his head through his nose brought along with it a deadly brain-eating amoeba. Once the doctors made the diagnosis, they told both of his parents that this was the time to say goodbye to their son because there was a very, very, minutely small chance of survival.

Sebastian DeLeon's parents describe him as an adventurous, bright 16-year-old young man. Getting that seemingly fatal diagnosis was the worst possible news that this family could have received.

Luckily for the DeLeon family, Dr. Humberto Liriano had seen this case before and knew how to react. Dr. Liriano is very close to this condition because he lost a young patient to the very same thing two years ago.

In 2014, Jordan was on vacation with his family in Costa Rica when water went up his nose. A few days later, headaches began, and he was taken to the hospital in Orlando once he got home.

The doctors ordered the potentially lifesaving drugs, but they sadly did not get there in time.

This year, when DeLeon entered their hospital, they were able to have the drug driven to them within 12 minutes, thanks to the team of doctors' quick diagnosis and plan of action.

It's terrifying what these microscopic organisms can do to a human being. While they may live in some of our water, they will not attack the brain unless they enter the skull forcibly through the nose.

Thankfully, DeLeon is expected to recover after some rehabilitation. He did, after all, escape death. You can watch his full story in the video below.
