Being a ballerina takes more than its fair share of dedication and discipline. There are plenty of stories and examples of the type of perseverance its takes to rise to the top of the ballet hierarchy like ballerinas such, as American Ballet Theater's Misty Copeland has done. Even this comedic routine by the Vienna State Ballet is evidence of the kind of technique and precision that is required to be a professional ballerina, no matter how lighthearted the material.
That is what makes Clarissa May so special. After triumphing over struggles with anorexia and a head injury that kept her from dancing for the better part of two years, May has bounced back with an indomitable spirit that is an inspiration to everyone, whether you're an aspiring dancer or just someone who loves to watch talent in action.
May has her own YouTube channel and blog called Live on Pointe, which she started as a means to inspire others with her story and encourage young women to never give up on their dreams, or themselves. The clip below shows May's first place–winning performance of the Gamzatti variation from the ballet La Bayadere. Perhaps what is most inspiring about this performance is what you cannot see: This was only May's second competition since returning to dance after her illness and injuries. At both of May's competitions after her return, she placed first.
