Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog.
Many people who visit shelters looking to adopt a dog bring home a perfect puppy. It's not uncommon to overlook those older dogs who may have health issues or disabilities.
To help showcase senior dogs in a different light, and get more senior dogs out of shelters and into loving homes, the Sandton SPCA in South Africa came up with a brilliant idea. Their annual canine calendar, "Golden Oldies," is a beloved fundraising initiative for the Sandton & Eastern Metro SPCA. Photographer Emma O’Brien opened her studio to the elderly calendar stars in order to create awareness around their often-excluded appeal.
In the video below, you'll meet some of these incredible senior dogs, and hear from their families. Wait until you hear how these dogs have shaped their lives in unexpected, beautiful ways.
The winner of the prestigious cover star spot, voted by on Facebook, was Rossi. Rossi is a 14-year-old Staffie who has been on wheels for the last seven years after complications from a back operation. Despite his disability, Rossi was very lively during his shoot, scooting around the studio and playing up to the camera.
Order your copy of the calendar on the Sandton SPCA website. Please help us spread the truth about senior dogs, and SHARE this video with all your friends on Facebook!
