High-School Seniors Rally Against Offensive Critics Who Shamed Them

Several seniors from New Hampshire’s Portsmouth High School were shocked to find out the negative things many were writing about them a day after their June 3 prom.

The local newspaper, the Portsmouth Herald, shared photos of the graduating students on its Facebook page to celebrate them. However, the photos were met with much criticism from community members and outsiders who found certain female outfits inappropriate.

Unhappy by the controversy, four Portsmouth student athletes hosted a rally in their hometown to fight against the cruel comments.

“Just glad these ladies are not my daughters!” wrote one commenter.

Another added: “I'm not making fun and neither is anyone else. They are pointing out facts. The dresses are too short, too tight. These ladies are still kids and they don't need to dress all provocative.”

The fashion criticism mimics the concerns from other proms across the nation as one girl was suspended for her gown, while another was ejected from the annual dance.

At the rally held in the Market Square area on Friday night, students and several community members aimed to send a positive message and take action against shaming girls.

“We just kind of want to prove that you can't measure our worth by the length of our skirts,” senior Ginger Ruesswick told New Hampshire’s WMUR.
