Grandpa Dies And His Family Forgets Him—Until This Very Moment

Sometimes, the most caring, hardworking people are completely overlooked, in favor of the "money-makers" of society. That's just part of what makes this video so powerful.

Organized by the Singapore Media Academy (SMA) and supported by the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA), participants of a film contest were tasked to produce a compelling, creative, touching, aspiring and yet informative short film celebrating service areas of employment: cleaning, security, landscape, floristry and social service sectors, and the important role they play in society.

This winning video of the "180 Short Film Competition" (Professional Category) entitled "My Grandfather," by Ray Pang Yoong Hui, not only accomplished this feat — but it also managed to weave into the story a touching, heartbreaking and emotional theme about family and love. "My Grandfather" depicts the story of a teenage girl who recalls her memories of her grandfather whenever she encounters elderly cleaners. By the end, I couldn't hold back the tears, and I was reminded to never take for granted those I love; you never know when they'll be gone. The film was conceptualized to heighten the appreciation and encourage respect for frontline workers in service industries, but it tells the story of something much greater.
