When 22-year-old Sarah Hoidahl, a single mom who works in Concord, N.H., just wanted to do a nice thing. So when she overheard two of her customers say that they were struggling because of the government shutdown, she decided to pay for the National Guard members' lunch out of her own pocket. Sarah's inspiring story touched a lot of people, and it wasn't long before someone decided to give Sarah a life-changing surprise.
When talk show host Ellen DeGeneres heard about Sarah, she flew her to be on the show. Once there, DeGeneres squared the tab and then some, giving Hoidahl $27.75 in cash and a check for $10,000! Overwhelmed by the amazing gift, Hoidahl started crying and buried her face in her hands. She couldn't stop thanking DeGeneres. This is proof that a small act of kindness truly can go a long way!
