Sister Of Homeless Woman Sleeping On Streets Says The Law Prevented Her From Taking Action

Cassie Godwin grew up idolizing her big sister, Alycia. Alycia was always charming and intelligent, in addition to being a talented triathlete.

In 2011, Cassie and Alycia's mother died, leading Alycia to suffer a psychotic break. As Alycia's mental health declined, she spent many nights in jail and even more nights in psychiatric hospitals.

Alycia currently lives on the streets of Los Angeles. Locals have seen her talking to herself in the middle of intersections, assaulting people, throwing things off random porches, and walking into busy traffic.

"Looking at her today, you would never know she holds two master’s degrees and was an inspirational speaker," Cassie wrote on GoFundMe.

Cassie is terrified that tragedy will strike. She says she spends her days driving the streets looking for her sister.

“The only reason I keep my cellphone on at night is to get the phone call that she’s dead,” she says.

Cassie is now speaking publicly about her sister in an effort to get her the help she needs — because the law is keeping her from doing what she feels she must do.
