These days, all kinds of modern options exist for people seeking romantic connections. There are dating sites, apps, and various other channels for those searching for "the one."
However, Twitter user Hayley Robbins tried something a little old-fashioned in search of "cute guys" while at the beach six years ago.
Hayley, who was 18 at the time, wrote her name and number with a permanent marker onto a softball and pitched it into the ocean. She hoped that the attractive man she was looking for would retrieve the ball and text her back.
Her plan might sound a little far-fetched, but it wouldn't be the first time someone was reunited with something like a message in a bottle after releasing it into the ocean.
Amazingly, Hayley did receive a text message about her softball from a random number. It had taken six years, but she was in for more of a surprise than just having her message answered.
When Hayley received a mysterious text message from someone claiming to have found her softball, she shared the news on Twitter.
Hayley explained:
When I went to the beach 6 YEARS AGO I wrote my name & number on a softball & threw it into the ocean & told cute guys to text me & I just got a text about it TONIGHT.
She had tossed the softball into the ocean on Myrtle Beach in South Carolina — just for fun.
Of course, she wasn't necessarily expecting anyone to actually get back to her.
The message read, "If found call [insert number here]" and asked specifically for "cute guys."
Hayley included her name and number, just in case a cute guy really did find the softball and they might live happily ever after together.
Much to Hayley's surprise, she received a text message six years later from a number she didn't know, saying, "Hey, I wanna be a superhero, guess my name."
The sender explained that he'd found her softball and claimed to be a guy named "Adam."
As you'd imagine, not everyone is exactly who they say they are on the internet — or over text after finding a suggestive softball.
Hayley attempted to add "Adam" on another form of social media, only to discover that Adam wasn't actually named Adam at all.
Adam was actually a 16 year-old-girl who appeared to be named Ashley.
A little more investigation revealed that Ashely was actually not Ashley either, and the girl who found the ball was really named Kelci.
Although the reality was disappointing, Hayley is lucky the person on the other end of the phone was just a teenage girl having a little bit of fun.
Hayley tells LittleThings that she wasn't mad when she found out the sender's real identity. Rather, she was "just confused on why she would pretend to be a guy and not just tell me, ya know? Either way it was super cool she found the ball after so long."
