Many women look forward to their wedding day for years and years.
Little girls dream of big white weddings: with the perfect future spouse at the end of the aisle, the stunning wedding dress, and the best party ever.
One detail many women think about, if they want to have a traditional wedding, is the concept of having "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue."
Brides who want to have these items at their weddings usually want them to be something special and meaningful — something they'll look back on and remember as an important part of their big day.
Some brides opt for jewelry passed down through the generations while others choose an item of memorabilia to pin inside their skirt. Still others decide to do their items themselves, DIY style — like these "something blue" shoes.
One woman, Alison Ferrell, wanted her "something blue" to be even more special, so she chose something quite unusual: a veteran.

Alison Ferrell always looked forward to her wedding day.
But she was even more excited after she invited her 92-year-old uncle to be her "something blue."
Her uncle, who served in the Unites States Marine Corps during World War II, was thrilled. But when he got sick before her wedding, he was afraid he wouldn't make it.
Alison posted her story on Love What Matters, where it quickly went viral.
Within a day, the post had over 110,000 reactions and over 26,000 shares.
In the post, Alison wrote:
“What’s your goal?” One of the nurses asked him.
"To be her 'Something Blue' on her wedding day," my uncle replied from his hospital bed.
My 92 year old uncle was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during WWII and served in combat on Naha in Okinawa.
After a bout with pneumonia and an extended stay in rehabilitation, he was able to meet his goal on May 13, 2017, my wedding day.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the church when he was escorted down the aisle in his dress blues.
It was such an honor to have him serve as my "Something Blue" on my wedding day and a memory that will last a lifetime.
Everyone who has seen these photos has been absolutely moved by the story behind them.
One person commented:
First, thank you sir for your service to our country. You truly are a part of the greatest generation.
Also, this is the sweetest story encompassing love, devotion, determination and accomplishment.
I was an RN. For an elderly person to overcome the health obstacles that are fatal to many his age is an amazing accomplishment.
God bless all three of you!
Another person wrote about the way it reminded her of her own wedding.
She commented:
The MOST precious moment.
At my wedding, my Poppop, who suffered from Alzheimer's, was sitting at back of the church as I walked back down the aisle.
I went to him and he had a rare moment of clarity.
He recognized me and told me I was "so beautiful!"
I will treasure that 30 seconds of clarity forever! Such a blessing!
