An ongoing drought in Poland has revealed a massive discovery this week more than 70 years after World War II, one that may unveil countless long-forgotten secrets.
Off the lake off the Bzura River, researchers have uncovered a Soviet fighter plane and the remains of some of its crew. Among their discoveries in the swampland bank, Jewish tombstones were also uncovered, according to reports. It has long been suspected that the river held artifacts and war remnants.
"The Vistula River is hiding no end of secrets," Jonny Daniels, head of Jewish foundation From the Depths, told the Associated Press. "They are everywhere."
But digging through the thick of the muddy banks seemed an impossible feat until the recent drought brought water levels to a record low, unearthing some of the buried remnants. The plane was revealed to be Soviet based on uniforms worn by the crew and distinct markings on the side of the plane.
"Until now, the water level did not allow for the search and there was no one willing to enter this swamp," Zdzislaw Leszczynski, head of the Wyszogrod museum examining the items, told the Associated Press. If there wasn't any prior incentive to excavating the area, there certainly is now.
