This Broken Vintage Treasure Gets A Brand-New, Swanky Life

When Imgur user benjitsu found a vintage speaker cabinet on the side of the road, he knew there was still some life in it.

The old speaker console had, at one time, housed a turntable that would play through built-in speakers and an amplifier.

In its day, it must have been a great piece for parties, but by the time benjitsu found it, it was well past its prime. It was missing the turntable, and the speakers and amp were broken beyond repair.

Its original owners had given up, but benjitsu could see that there was plenty of potential for it  maybe not as a speaker cabinet, due to the damage, but as something else.

After all, just because something is old doesn't mean it's outlived its usefulness. Sometimes it just needs extra love, like this adorable revamped trailer home.

He lugged it home (the speaker and amp made it quite heavy) and set about giving it a makeover into something just as swanky and party-ready, but maybe a little more timeless than a speaker for a now-outmoded technology.

Take a look at what he did to both update and preserve this cute, little find, and let us know what you think in the comments!

When he first found it, the speaker console was not in great shape. It was scratched and worn from years of use, and its internal components were all broken.

Still, its oval cabinets were appealing in a vintage way, and so benjitsu decided to salvage it.

On top, the control panel was still there, but nothing was functional. This old technology was fascinating, but sadly not operational.

The inside was in rough shape, too. The amp and speakers were broken  and probably had been for a while  so they were removed.

With the inside hollowed out, it was time to get to work making it new again!

First, a chemical stripper was applied to get the old varnish off. It was nasty stuff, but it did the job. The speaker ovals were also given a protective shield of painter's tape.

After the varnish was stripped off, the entire thing was sanded down to get rid of any scratches and dings in the wood's surface.

Benjitsu opted for a darker stain to give it a more modern look, one that would bring out the beauty of the wood grain. It was sealed with polyurethane.

The control panel was given a makeover, too. The bottom was replaced and lined with red felt. This would now serve as a place to store utensils.

Finally, this DIY project was all done. With the interior shelves replaced, the speaker console started its new life as a swanky liquor cabinet.

And except for the darker stain, he kept its cute, vintage appearance pretty much unchanged, so its original design and purpose can still be appreciated.

But the interior reveals a party waiting to happen!
