Former Spice Girl Mel C Bans Daughter From Watching Music Videos Because They’re ‘Inappropriate’

MTV may not play many music videos anymore, but that hasn't stopped performers from creating them for their new tunes.

If you have had the pleasure of sampling some current music videos, you may have noticed a theme. Or at least, former Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm has picked up on a trend she'd rather see go away.

The Daily Mail reports that Mel C admitted to Now magazine that she doesn't even allow her 9-year-old daughter to watch music videos.

She tells the magazine, "My little girl is 9 and she loves pop music, she sings all the lyrics — she doesn't know what they mean, thank God, but I can't let her watch the videos, as they're totally inappropriate."

This is pretty extreme for any mother, but especially one who used to perform in some fairly racy music videos herself.

Of course, Mel's argument has more to do with the fact that music videos and their performers have become increasingly sexualized since she was onstage.

Funnily enough, the Spice Girls weren't exactly known for being conservative themselves.

The girl group was an essential part of pop culture and the music scene in the 1990s.

However, opinions have changed now that they're all grown up.

Mel C's 9-year-old daughter Scarlet will not be watching any recently released music videos.

The Spice Girls, including Mel C, were known for showing some skin, but their dance moves were fairly tame compared to some of the things we see today.

Moreover, Mel recalled in the interview an instance when she and the Spice Girls had shut down a producer for making inappropriate demands like asking them to pull their skirts up.

She said: "There should be some regulations. I'm sick of seeing everybody's bum. I'm over it. Seriously, nothing is shocking anymore."

Now that Mel has managed to gain some perspective, she can look back at the sexism she and the Spice Girls faced in the music business, even at the height of their fame.

For this reason, Mel has chosen to keep her daughter away from it entirely — and to use her voice to advocate for the rights of female artists and women everywhere.

Although she doesn't like music videos, she is proud of the women who are dominating the music scene today, and of the part she and the Spice Girls played in opening the door for them.
