Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts have discovered a new way to potentially help people who have suffered heart attacks.
The way they did that? By creating heart tissue out of a spinach leaf!
The researchers first stripped the leaf using detergent. Over time, this made the leaf translucent, which, in itself, is captivating to watch. After that, they transformed the spinach again.
They planted, or "seeded," the veins of the spinach leaf with human heart tissue. Amazingly, muscle cells began to beat within the leaf.
The video below shows how the red dye is actually being pumped through the veins of the once-spinach leaf, as well as how much the leaf itself has truly transformed.
It's practically unrecognizable, and looks instead like what we'd imagine heart tissue to look like.
Just as remarkable as the transformation is what the researchers hope it may mean for health care. The experts think this procedure will one day help heart attack patients.
Once research like this is perfected, who knows what may come of it. Every mad scientist starts somewheres — right?
