Spring rolls are a delicious, savory side dish to accompany any East Asian and/or Southeast Asian meal. In America, they're typically wrapped in rice paper or wonton wrappers, filled with vegetables and pan or deep-fried. Oh, and did I mention they're delicious?!
But here at LittleThings, we love to mix things up and rework our favorite recipes using common household ingredients. In the video below, Food & Wine Test Kitchen whiz Justin Chapple demos a genius trick for making your own spring rolls at home when you don't have wonton wrappers in the kitchen.
According to Justin, you can use ordinary, everyday white bread! Yep! And the end result turns out just as crispy, golden, and steamy as traditional spring rolls. Besides, who doesn't have a few slices of white bread in the pantry?
What an excellent idea. I'm trying this recipe tonight, and I can't wait!
