Over his decades as a comedian, funnyman Steve Martin has definitely figured out the key to making an audience laugh.
Whether he's onstage doing stand-up or singing with his bluegrass band, or combining those two skills like he did during his visit to Jimmy Fallon's show earlier this year, you can count on Martin putting a smile on your face. I still remember the first time I saw him in The Jerk and actually crying from laughing so much!
This is why I wasn't surprised to stumble across this silly sketch from way back in 1980. That also happened to be a year where the Summer Olympics were being held in Moscow, Russia. However, the tense political climate at the time prompted many countries, including the United States, to back out of participating.
Of course, Martin still found a way to make light of the sensitive situation with this perfectly goofy spoof on the competition. Acting as a diver from the U.S., the silver-haired jokester crafts his own, um, unique techniques for the faux event.
Instead of gracefully spinning in the air and splashing into the pool, Martin's fictional diver is revered for clumsily plopping into the water.
Starting with a cannon ball, he earns praise for, "one of the best and loudest ka-thunks I've ever heard," from the commentators and a near perfect score from the judges.
