Are you sick and tired of commuting to work every day? I used to think I had it rough, until I heard the following story of a man who does whatever it takes to care for his family.
Steve Simoff lives in Davis City, IA with his wife Renee and their 22-year-old grandson, and works 35 miles away as a night security guard at the Lakeside Hotel and Casino in Osceola. However, getting to his 11 p.m. shift every night is not as simple as jumping into his 2002 minivan.
Instead, Simoff can't afford the gas to take the trip, and walks for more than six hours down a bleak interstate to get to his job, which pays $9.07 per hour. Through rain, snow, sleet, and wind, the 61-year-old grandfather leaves his home around 3:30 p.m. every day so that he can pay rent for the family's apartment.
Simoff's grandson has been out of work since January and told The Des Moines Register his grandfather is his hero. Renee Simoff receives Supplemental Security Income after suffering from a stroke and multiple heart attacks in recent years.
In the video below, Simoff says family and work are the two most important things he can think of. The fact that just getting to work is a job within itself makes him a hero in my eyes, too.
